Inventor is a large mechanical-design package, so choosing a first book is less about finding the thickest title and more about matching the teaching style to what you need to learn. A complete beginner may benefit from a tutorial-led book, while an engineering student may want drawing principles alongside modelling. Someone preparing for Autodesk certification has a different requirement again.

How this shortlist was chosen

This comparison is based on current publisher information, tables of contents, edition details and the stated learning approach of each title. CAD Market has not claimed hands-on testing of books we have not personally reviewed. Prices are omitted because they change frequently. The Amazon links below point to the exact paperback editions we have verified.

The four books

1

Parametric Modeling with Autodesk Inventor 2027

Luke Jumper and Randy H. Shih

Best all-round hands-on beginner choice
PublisherSDC Publications
Print ISBN9781630578008
FocusParametric modelling

This is the strongest fit for a learner who wants to build Inventor knowledge by actually modelling. It uses seventeen tutorial-style lessons and starts from the fundamentals before moving into intelligent mechanical designs, drawings and assemblies.

The breadth is useful without turning the book into a command encyclopaedia. Topics include model history, constraints, 3D construction, drawings and model-based definition, sheet metal, assemblies, Content Center, motion, collision/contact, 3D printing and introductory stress analysis. New copies also include extensive video instruction.

  • Good for: complete beginners, apprentices and engineering students who learn by doing.
  • Less suitable if: your main requirement is engineering-drawing theory rather than Inventor modelling practice.
2

Autodesk Inventor 2027: A Tutorial Introduction

L. Scott Hansen

Best straightforward tutorial introduction
PublisherSDC Publications
Print ISBN9781630577995
Pages528
FocusLearn by doing

This title is explicitly written for people with little or no previous CAD experience and follows a learn-by-doing approach. It begins with sketches and basic solid modelling, then develops into drawings, assemblies and more specialised Inventor tools.

Its later coverage is unusually broad for an introductory title, including threads, stress analysis, Design Accelerator, sheet metal, weldments, Content Center and iLogic. That makes it attractive to someone who wants a single book that continues well beyond the first few modelling exercises.

  • Good for: independent learners wanting a clear progression from basic to more advanced Inventor work.
  • Less suitable if: you want engineering graphics taught as a subject alongside the software.
3

Autodesk Inventor 2027 and Engineering Graphics

Randy H. Shih

Best for engineering drawing as well as Inventor
PublisherSDC Publications
Print ISBN9781630578091
FocusEngineering graphics + Inventor

This book takes a different approach by teaching the principles of engineering graphics while teaching Inventor. That combination is particularly relevant to engineering students and apprentices, because producing a 3D model is only part of the job: understanding how engineering information is communicated through drawings is equally important.

The publisher describes a step-by-step approach covering common Inventor features while developing the ability to create and read engineering drawings. It is also aligned with the Autodesk Inventor Certified User exam.

  • Good for: engineering courses, apprenticeships and learners who need drawing knowledge as well as software skills.
  • Less suitable if: you already understand engineering graphics and only want concentrated Inventor instruction.
4

Autodesk Inventor 2027 Certified User Exam Study Guide

Thom Tremblay and L. Scott Hansen

Best focused certification companion
PublisherSDC Publications
Print ISBN9781630578350
FocusCertified User exam

This is the specialist choice in the group. Rather than being our first recommendation for learning Inventor from scratch, it makes more sense for someone who already has a foundation and wants material organised around the Autodesk Certified User examination.

Its value is therefore highly dependent on your objective. If certification is part of a college course, apprenticeship or personal development plan, focused exam preparation can complement a broader tutorial book. If your only goal is practical modelling skill, one of the first three titles is likely to make more sense as a starting point.

  • Good for: learners preparing specifically for Autodesk Inventor Certified User assessment.
  • Less suitable if: you need your first comprehensive Inventor teaching book.

What should a beginner Inventor book teach?

A useful first Inventor book should do more than show where buttons are. The important early concepts include sketch constraints, dimensions, design intent, feature order and the relationship between parts, assemblies and drawings.

That matters because Inventor is parametric. A model that merely looks correct is not necessarily a well-constructed model. Beginners should learn to create geometry that can be edited predictably when dimensions or design requirements change.

Inventor books for apprentices and engineering students

For an engineering learner, we would place extra value on exercises that connect modelling to real engineering practice: fully constrained sketches, sensible feature selection, assemblies, drawing creation and design changes. Coverage of sheet metal, Content Center, stress analysis or motion can be useful later, but a strong foundation comes first.

This is where Autodesk Inventor 2027 and Engineering Graphics becomes particularly interesting. Someone learning Inventor as part of an engineering qualification may benefit from learning the graphical language of engineering at the same time rather than treating drawing interpretation as a separate subject.

Do you need a 2027 edition?

Not necessarily. Core Inventor skills remain useful across releases, and an older edition can be good value if the saving is substantial. The main difficulty for a beginner is when screenshots and command locations no longer match the software closely enough to follow comfortably.

We cover that question in more detail in Can you learn CAD from an older book?

Paperback or digital?

Inventor books tend to contain a large number of screenshots and step-by-step exercises. A paperback can sit beside the workstation while Inventor uses the whole monitor, whereas a digital edition can offer search, portability and zooming on detailed images. Our separate Kindle vs paperback CAD books guide explains the trade-offs.

Which one would we start with?

For a complete beginner who wants structured modelling practice, Parametric Modeling with Autodesk Inventor 2027 has the most immediately useful combination of tutorial work and broad mechanical-design coverage in this shortlist. For an engineering student or apprentice who also needs to develop engineering drawing knowledge, Autodesk Inventor 2027 and Engineering Graphics has a different and potentially very useful emphasis.

Those are recommendations based on the books' published contents and teaching approaches, not claims that CAD Market has physically tested every title. As we obtain and use books ourselves, we can add first-hand observations to future updates.

What comes next?

CAD Market's book coverage began with AutoCAD and is now expanding into Inventor. Autodesk Fusion and specialist CAD titles will follow, and the site will then broaden further into other CAD families rather than remaining Autodesk-only.
